Mohammed Fairouz’s world premiere and a controversial overture highlight ASO’s ‘Classical Edge’ (music review)

The world premiere of Mohammed Fairouz’s Violin Concerto, titled “Al-Andalus,” highlighted the Alabama Symphony’s Classical Edge concert Saturday night, in which a familiar friend in conductor Fawzi Haimor was brought together with Rachel Barton Pine, a violin virtuoso making her Birmingham debut.
The intrepid ASO, which repeatedly rises to the challenges of new scores, tackled the work with characteristic self-assurance and insight, Pine adorning it with glow and passion.
