Taking the stage in a sparkling, long, flowing gold dress, Rachel Barton Pine brought a different feel to The Maryland Theatre on Sunday.
Pine, a world-renowned violinist who was performing with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, was exposing the crowd to Dmitri Shostakovich, a Russian-born, 20th-century composer and pianist who led a difficult life under the Soviet government and was accused of writing inappropriate music.

St. Pauls UCC: My Sacred Space for Bach
“You must practice Bach. It is the music of Gott!” Thus, I was regularly instructed by the elderly German ladies at St. Pauls United Church of Christ in Chicago, the church in which I was raised, during my earliest years as a violinist.
I was fortunate to grow up at St. Pauls, a church with a deep dedication to music. The church has been a spiritual home to opera singers and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Oratorios, cantatas, and other choral works of the great classical composers are often performed as part of the service, and the music of Bach is celebrated above all others. The sanctuary itself even features a stained glass window of Bach. I have vivid memories of spending Sunday mornings surrounded by the glorious sound of Bach’s Toccatas and Fugues on the organ.

The Chicago-based Rachel Barton Pine Foundation has acquired a historic Stradivarius violin dating from 1732.
The instrument, known to rare violin fanciers as the “Arkwright Lady Rebecca Sylvan” Stradivarius, was donated by its current owner, Joseph Sylvan, a violinist, pedagogue and former music professor at New Mexico State University, according to a statement by Chicago violinist Rachel Barton Pine, the foundation’s founder and president.

That’s what I got while listening to violinist Rachel Barton Pine perform with the Santa Rosa Symphony in California.
There’s no doubt my reaction was largely based on her incredible talent and the way in which she commanded the stage with her passion, but I was also touched by the interview I had with her earlier.
Barton Pine’s positive outlook and her bubbly personality make it hard to believe she ever encountered anything negative in her life. But she certainly has.
